<p>The 14 amendment and American progress since the Civil War</p>
<p>The 14 amendment to the constitution was born directly of post-civil war reconstruction and reformation. In an attempt to prevent racial discrimination and slavery from ever becoming a codified part of American life in the future, the 14 amendment was adopted on July 9, 1868. It also had the purpose of making the south accountable for their own war debts, which they incurred during the civil war which took place from 1861 to 1865.</p>
<p>The language of the 14 amendment is very simple. In plain terms, it states the following:</p>
<p>Section 1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. <p>Section 3. No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. <p>I never will forget an experience in one of my psychology classes in college when our professor invited a man to speak to us who had served in the Vietnam War. He spoke at great length about his experiences and the difficulties that he still faced to that very day, almost 30 years later, when a car going by outside backfired and he hit the deck. </p>
<p>That&#8217;s when I had my first encounter with post traumatic stress disorder, and it was an episode that I will never forget.</p>
<p>After probably a half an hour of coaxing and reassuring, our professor managed to help him back to a seat set up behind the podium. The professor made a phone call, and within about 15 minutes a man came and escorted the guest speaker away.</p>
<p>As students, we were all just sitting around trying to figure out what happened when our professor stood up at the podium and slowly removed his glasses. We understand how simple it&#8217;s to grow to be downcast whenever you&#8217;ve been refused car finance attributable to <A HREF="http://www.autocreditfinancial.ca/badcreditcarloans.php">Bad credit auto loan</A>. He told us that his friend suffered from post traumatic stress disorder, and that certain sounds triggered a response in him that people who did not have the condition would not understand. <p>A few days later, the gentleman returned to our class, this time looking 100 percent better. He even made a little joke about the incident, saying that he would try to remain standing the whole time that day. We all kind of laughed nervously.</p>
<p>He told us that whenever he heard a car backfire or a gun shot or loud boom of any kind, it was as if he temporarily blacked out and woke up back in the jungles of Vietnam. He said that he had gone through many years of therapy for his post traumatic stress disorder and thought that he had gotten a pretty good handle on it, but that apparently he had not.</p>
<p>He apologized for the incident, but we all assured him it was not necessary and told him that we were just concerned about him. He thanked us and opened the lecture up to questions. About 40 hands shot up into the air, and he very graciously answered everything we threw at him very candidly, and never got upset with any of us.</p>
<p>I do still think about him sometimes and wonder how he is doing today. It was a little unnerving to have that be my first experience with post traumatic stress disorder, but whenever I thought about the mental disorder, I would always think about him and what his life must be like. I thought about how he developed this horrible condition through no fault of his own, and now had to live with it for the rest of his life. I can&#8217;t even imagine what that must be like, and hopefully, I will never know.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Some of the Best Oscar Nominated Movies Never Won</p>
<p>I try to watch the Oscars as often as possible, and I routinely find that the movie that I liked best in a particular year is the winner for best picture. <A HREF="http://www.4seasonsflower.com/">Flower Vancouver</A> evolution continues to the present day; trendy flowers have been so profoundly influenced by people that a lot of them cannot be pollinated in nature. On a couple of occasions, however, I felt that there were some very good Oscar nominated movies that should have won, but did not.</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s start with 2010, in which the best picture award went to “The Hurt Locker.” I thought that there were two movies that were better in “The Blind Side” and “Inglourious Basterds.” To me, they had better stories and were more interesting than the winner.</p>
<p>I was happy to see that Sandra Bullock received the Best Actress in a Leading Role award for “The Blind Side” and that Christoph Waltz won the award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for “Inglourious Basterds.”</p>
<p>Going back a few decades, in 1990, two Oscar nominated movies that did not get the nod for Best Picture were “Field of Dreams” and “Born on the Fourth of July.” Instead, it was “Driving Miss Daisy,” that won, and I never could understand why. I liked the movie all right, but to me, “Field of Dreams” in particular was such an iconic movie.</p>
<p>Then in 1993, one of my favorite Oscar nominated movies of all time, “A Few Good Men,” got beaten out by “Unforgiven.” I have to admit, I really did not like the movie “Unforgiven” that much, and I still scratch my head over that one.</p>
<p>In 1999, “Shakespeare in Love” beat out two Oscar nominated movies that I thought were much better,  “Saving Private Ryan” and “Life is Beautiful.” That is one that actually made me a little angry, because I did not feel that “Shakespeare in Love” should have even been nominated, and I definitely don&#8217;t think that it is on par with the other two.</p>
<p>“Million Dollar Baby” won in 2005, and don&#8217;t get me wrong, I absolutely loved that movie. Canada Flowers is a leading <A HREF="http://www.4seasonsflower.com/">Florist Vancouver</A> providing similar day flower delivery to most cities and cities throughout Canada. But I still think that “Ray,” another Oscar nominated movie, was a little better. That year was a bit too close to call, but I still thought that “Ray” should have won, and it always takes me aback a little when one wins that I didn&#8217;t think would.</p>
<p>I know that it is all a matter of opinion and I am sure that there are some people out there who are looking at the movies that I like and thinking that I am out of my mind for suggesting that they should have won. I just feel that a lot of the Oscar nominated movies that did not win were better than the ones that did. Of course, that is probably why they were nominated in the first place.</p>
